Celebrated as 'the greatest masterpiece
of Hellenistic sculpture', The Winged
Victory of Samothrace is a marble
sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike.
Created to honor this legendary
goddess of victory and to pay tribute
to a sea battle, her feminine silhouette
exudes a sense of triumph, struggle,
action and fervor. The divine and
rousing triumphant spirits unite in her
winged posture and divine air. In the
extraordinary mastery of form and
movement, and due to the missing
head she embodies the supernatural.
The wind and the sea, that make her
drapery flow artfully, suggest struggle,
destiny and divine help with a great
deal of amazing grace.
